Poem excerpt: Beautiful Queens

...The women I share company with don’t suffer
or try to make me
It’s not that we don’t have conflicts,
we simply respect our right to disagree Instead of us and them and you or me
It’s you & I relating to each other– empathetically
Beautiful queens who are comfortable being direct
Don’t have a need to go after anyone’s neck

Poem excerpt: I Like Who I See

...I craved your attention & admired your swag
Recognized your gifts & talents- whether or not you had a bag
It was like a mental illness
That I overcame with the prescription of stillness
Gratefully, I slowed down enough to see
That I actually don’t like anyone who
treats me like they don’t like me
It’s not insulting that you don’t like dark skin
Or that your non-black women don’t respect your kin
Everybody has a right to call beauty
Whatever we see it to be
As for me,
When I look in the mirror- I like who I see

Poem excerpt: Green & Blue

He’s so free
Focus is on us, instead of me
And he miraculously managed to look out for us
in this me society
Burger King commercials keep telling him to have it his way
Billboards in his neighborhood keeps telling him it’s night
when it’s actually day
He’s on a much different time schedule than the clock
His weapon is love, while most of his family carries a glock
He’s so free
His roots run deep, just like an oak tree
His people weren’t slaves- they were forced into slavery
He writes & sings songs about
how they were able to keep their dignity...

Poem excerpt: Everything Will Be OK

Don’t waste your energy trying to prove you’re innocent
when folks decided you are guilty
Even/especially when they ask you to talk about it
while they assume the role of Judge Judy
Simply don’t do it.
You know the people who normally think their point of view
is better than yours
They don’t want to converse- they want to settle the score
Interrupt you every which a way
And then have the nerve to tell you what is & what’s not ok
for you to say
So don’t yield to the temptation of trying to be heard
And don’t take offense to their audacity & absurd
Way of talking to you- bro or sis
I know it’s hard not to return a dis for a dis
But if I can do it- anybody on God’s green earth can
Well, anybody who is a friend, follower, and fan
Of God on the inside, that is
Just make sure that you don’t accept no guilt trips from whoever
Guess how often you should feel guilty- never!...

Poem excerpt: Happy & Free

I like feeling that kind of happy & free
That has nothing to do with you or me
It’s not what either of us said that made me glow
The kind of contentment you have when you know that you know
And you don’t have to prove that you know it
No wondering what’s in your food because you grow it
The kind of freedom that you can have at any age
Where you are the only one who has the power
to get you on the same page
Simply because you are the leader of you & only youThe kind of happy & free...
